LATREA’S BIOLOGICAL MOTHER WAS a drug addict. Her father was an alcoholic. As time went by, more and more money was spent supporting habits and less was left for rent and food. The family moved from one apartment to another, sometimes leaving before the eviction notice could be taped to the door. Drug and alcohol addiction makes a peculiar prison. Many addicted persons won’t think twice about sacrificing everything they have — their jobs, their lives, their own children — for a longer sentence. When Ashley was born, Latrea, then eight, was told the baby was her responsibility. It was her job to care for her baby sister, whose blood vessels pulsed with traces of crack cocaine.

Latrea did everything she could to give Ashley a stable home life. Although she was just a kid herself, she took on the role of parent to her sister. “I taught her how to read. I taught her how to ride a bike. I made sure she did her homework. I made sure she got on the bus to school. I made sure she got home safely.” She pauses and adds, “Those were trying times.”
